Pay Your Parking Through The SMS Gateway
Carleton, Ottawa – Students can now pay for, and extend, their parking with SMS text messaging through the SMS Gateway.
It’s ingenious really – a system that allows you to pay for your parking with the aid of text messaging. It is also designed to remind you when your parking time is almost expired, with the option of renewal… all done through the SMS gateway.
This clever system is the handiwork Dwight Duego, professor of computer science at Carlton University. “There is no need to leave important meetings, lunch dates or classes to fill the parking meter. Users can extend their
parking time from wherever they happen to be” Duego said in a press release published on Carleton University’s website. Registration to this system is done by text message through an SMS gateway and requires a valid credit card. “This works on any phone, you don’t need an iPhone or something like it,” Duego continued.
But this system, although the first of its kind in Canada, is far from being one of a kind. In both Europe and Asia similar systems are already in place, but require drivers to make a call first, before being able to use the SMS gateway text messaging option. In the United States a number of other companies are in the process of rolling out similar systems to get a piece of the parking action. The global parking industry is worth $100 billion annually.
Doubtless there are many applications of such a convenient and very much cost-effective service, especially where there are more owners of normal handsets than Smartphones, and where the text messaging is by far the preferred method of mobile communication as a result of its relatively low cost. In fact, it’s probably more a question of who’s going to do it first and reap the rewards? After all, it only takes a bit of tech savvy and an SMS gateway connection, and you don’t need to be a professor of computer science.
The SMS gateway provides the opportunity to integrate SMS text messaging functionality into virtually any existing software environment. This is achieved with the implementation of the application programming interface (API), of which there exist a number that correspond to popular protocols and/or programming languages.
