Texting Through The SMS Gateway
South Australia is the most recent state to employ an emergency warning system to notify residents about bush fires – a system capable of sending out 300 text messages every second. If you want to do the same, whether with 300 texts a second or 10 a week, then this is the post you should read.
So how does South Australia’s alert system work? Well, let’s start with a hypothetical scenario in which a fire, which could potentially threaten human lives or the possessions attached to those lives, has broken out. The Australian authorities will typically compose a message with a 160-character limit to be sent to all parties concerned. Depending on the infrastructure of the party who sends out the alerts, a specific interface will be used to submit the messages in a batch to the SMS gateway. The latter will, in turn, relay the message to the handset of residents in the area.
This same technology can be employed by businesses to communicate with current and prospective clients as well as employees, local and international, by sending personalised messages through the SMS gateway. It’s a solution that thousands of companies around the globe have found to be more successful than traditional methods of bulk client communication, including email. And to ensure that everyone gets a piece of the SMS pie, there exists an interface suitable for different levels of computer proficiency.
Web Based Interfaces for Beginner and Intermediate Computer Users
Most of us have used a web-based interface to send an SMS. And, if you haven’t, relax – it’s pretty much like sending an email. These interfaces provide you with:
- An interface where messages can be sent in bulk or one by one.
- An address book to manage individual contacts and contact lists.
- Messaging reports that allow you to see which messages have been delivered, which await delivery and messages that have bounced.
- A ‘Sent’ folder that allows you to keep track of messages that have been sent.
This web based interface usually requires an account with a provider that facilitates communication with the SMS gateway. For an example of a web based interface, then have a look at Clickatell’s Communicator.
SMS Gateway API’s for Advanced Computer Users
Think of an API as a translator, that communicates between you and the SMS gateway. As with human languages, there exist a number of computer languages. And thus a number of API’s, capable of interfacing with different software environments, have been developed. These include:
| HTTP/S | Web-based and easy to employ for the sending and receiving of SMS messages. |
| FTP | Web-based as well, but based on the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). This API allows you to upload a delimited file (.CSV) to a specific location. That file is then read and the bulk messages sent. |
| XML | Web-based and flexible. |
| SMTP | Perhaps more commonly known as SMS to email. This API allows you to connect to the SMS gateway with a simple plain text email, the body of which contains the messages to be relayed. |
| SOAP | An XML-based protocol that allows for inter-application communication via HTTP. |
| .COM | Quite simply, this is a binary interface that can enable Windows-based programs to send and receive SMS messages. |
| SMPP | A protocol on its own, SMPP allows for the rapid transmission of bulk SMS messages over a TCP session. Due to its language and platform independence, this protocol is favoured by many companies who host their own native software environment. |
