Festive SMPP Application

As we enter the festive season, SMPP can play a vital role in keeping your customers safe and, in turn, fuel holiday and new year sales.

The Short Message Peer-to-Peer (SMPP) protocol is designed for high-volume transmission of SMS messages to an SMS Gateway (also known as the SMSC), which connects you to current and potential customers. It runs on TCP, meaning that you can use an existing internet connection to submit messages using proprietary and/or legacy software.

Currently, a number of SMPP versions exist, but v3.3 is still the most widely employed – typically differentiated from later versions by requiring a separate SMPP and TCP session to send and receive. Some providers do, however, provide some v3.4 functionality by allowing use of the BIND_TRANSCEIVER field in the PDU.

The real efficacy of this robust protocol lies in its real-world application, allowing companies, governments and other sizeable corporate entities, who have their own development teams, to seamlessly integrate this booming technology into their existing customer communication framework. So, how can you make SMPP work in your favour before the year runs out?

SMPP Ensures Speedy Message Delivery

Like most of the other SMS gateway API’s (Application Programming Interfaces), SMPP allows for both local and international SMS transmission. In this case, however, it’s the local aspect that could help you get in touch with customers, providing essential information regarding your locale, while they are away on holiday.

Example: “Ronson’s Metalworks Bush Fire Alert: Northwest Melbourne Affected. Fire Spreading due East at 45 km/h.”

Example: “Seville & Co Financial Services Traffic Update: Accident on National 31 (Hume Highway) 2km outside Sydney. Traffic backed-up. Please drive safely”

SMPP = Reliable Message Delivery

Due to the nature of the SMPP protocol, it allows for the monitoring of messages based on either synchronous or asynchronous message delivery. This means that an acknowledgment of a received packet is transmitted back to the sender (synchronous) or that acknowledgment of all packets is returned to the sender once the after transmission (asynchronous). Additionally, SMPP provides you with the functionality of seeing which messages received their final destination and which didn’t.

SMPP is Flexible

The prevalence of mobile technologies is increasing and it is furthering consumers’ reliance on mobile services with it. SMPP allows for more than just text messaging, enabling companies to:

  • Also send messages in Unicode (non-Latin character support), binary SMS, flash.
  • Send messages in excess of the standard 160 characters.
  • Send ringtones and logos.
  • Enable two-way communication with customers
  • etc.
