SMPP protocol used in high volume bulk SMS
You are not alone if you have never heard of SMPP or Short Message Peer-to-Peer Protocol. Even though a variety of different protocols are used in the transmission of SMS messages, SMS’ing and the technology behind it have become synonymous in many people’s minds (so much so, that Australians, amongst other cultures, use the word SMS to describe the act of sending or receiving a text message). However, the process behind sending SMS messages is more complex, and different protocols can be utilised depending on both the hardware or software used to send and/or receive the SMS and the volume requirements of the sending organization. SMPP is one of the many communication protocols that organisations wishing to send bulk SMS messages can utilise.
SMPP is widely used in the telecommunications industry to exchange SMS messages between short message service centres (SMSC) and/or external short messaging entities (ESME). It is the protocol most often used by organizations needing to send vast amounts of SMS messages simultaneously. Because an SMPP connection is continuously connected to the SMS Gateway, it is an extremely fast and reliable way to send bulk SMS messages.
For businesses offering subscription-based services, such as news organizations, mobile sales platforms and financial organizations, SMPP is ideal. These value-adding service providers (VASP) can submit their content-filled SMS messages – anything from news alerts, logo’s, ringtones and love poems to financial information – to an SMSC using the SMPP protocol. The SMSC then delivers this premium-rated SMS onto the subscriber, who is charged extra for receiving this value-added content. The profit from this SMS is split between the mobile provider and the VASP.
There are several other advantages of using the SMPP protocol to send bulk SMS messages. The SMPP protocol is independent of any programming language, is a high speed connection and supports binary message types, such as ringtones, picture messaging and WAP push. Extended length messages, Two Way SMS, message ID’s and delivery acknowledgement features, are other options.
If you’re looking for high-volume SMS messaging capabilities, you have a permanent internet connection, a static IP address and a purchased email address, then SMPP could be the solution for you.
